University of Minnesota Twin Cities 2016 Update on Women and Girls of Color Initiative

As a part of the The University of Minnesota’s commitment to the Collaborative to advance equity through research, preliminary   identification of faculty working on women and girls of color at the University has been completed. In addition, UMTC members attended the United State of Women Conference in Washington, DC on June 14-15, 2016. A core group was also formed that includes members from College of Education and Human Development; Humphrey School of Public Affairs Center for Women, Gender, & Public Policy; Office for Equity and Diversity; Office of Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs; Urban Research and Outreach Center.

The following work is also underway:

  • Scan of current and past work on women and girls of color across the institution is beginning.
  • The UMNTC in its Women and Girls of Color Initiative will align its efforts to contribute to the implementation phase of the Young Women’s Initiative of Minnesota (YWI MN) which will begin after completion of the Action Plan in April 2017. The YWI MN is a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership between the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota and the Governor’s Office of the State of Minnesota. The goals of this initiative are to improve equity in outcomes for young (aged 12-24) women of color, American Indian young women, LGBTQ youth, women with disabilities, and women in greater Minnesota. UROC will serve as a third-party entity to engage stakeholders, conduct research and manage the process of creating an Action Plan.

“We are hopeful that our work will strengthen partnerships between the University of Minnesota, state government, and members of our broader community as we bring together our collective resources to improve equity for women and girls of color and American Indian women and girls.”

Rebecca Ropers-Huilman, Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs
